We are connected to the key centers of the world economically, but not culturally. The official view is that we are really too young to have produced anything worth reading. Singapore has only been an independent country for fifty years. How would you characterize Singaporean literature and poetry?ĪP: Well, it isn’t supposed to exist. HFR: A lot of readers may not be familiar with Singaporean literature and poetry, even though because a lot of it is in English, it should be available. Between pointing out the most haunted building in Singapore, lunch at a hawker center, and wine at the Flower Dome, he sat down with us in the National Library for a conversation. One May afternoon, he kindly crammed as many of as us as we could fit into his car and took us for a tour of Singapore. Singaporean poet Alvin Pang met several HFR editors at AWP in Minneapolis and, upon discovering that many of us would be in Singapore that summer on various fellowships, casually suggested meeting up.
